Singer, songwriter, poet and political activist Denis Kevans, known as Australia's 'Poet Lorikeet', has died. [...]
A regular at Australian folk festivals, Kevans wrote poems which celebrated working-class culture and barracked for environmental protection. He was also known for his anti-war sentiments, most notably when he had seven of his poems printed privately for the 50th anniversary of Anzac Day.
Kevans won a number of literary awards, including the Communist Party Poetry Award (1960) and the Mary Gilmore Award (1960 and 1962). [...]
