Put that way, it doesn't sound very enticing, but, yes, I have indeed decided to throw my battered beret into the ring when Oxford University re-runs the election for the professorship of poetry, which descended into farce last week when the victorious candidate, Ruth Padel, resigned after being implicated in a smear campaign against rival Derek Walcott."
