This is particularly true of Filipino writers, who write today in more than 8 literary languages (Cebuano, English, Filipino, Hiligaynon, Ilocano, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Tagalog, and others). More than 8 million Filipinos, some of them writers, live overseas, in what could be the 21st century’s biggest diaspora. To many writers, the term “Philippines” no longer refers to an archipelago off Asia’s mainland, but to an imagined global community with real Filipinos in it.
